1:144 Scale Metal Diecast Short Stirling British RAF Bomber – 90 Sqn Length: 7.5″ Wingspan: 8.25
ThisStirling model has some very small and fragile parts for the landing gear that needs to be assembled/put in place. A small amount of glue might be needed to secure the pieces.
There are various gun positions on the model, these do not move. The propellers are glued in place, they do not turn.
A plastic display stand is included with the model.
This is really a “no-play” model or a “display-only” model. It is mostly metal and very heavy. It also has a number of antennas which look great but are very fragile. If you have small kids that like to play with your models, save yourself some frustration (and money) and wait till later to get a model like this one. The box is labeled as not suitable for children under 14.
The maker of this model did a good job with this model, specifically the color scheme and the markings are very crisp and clear. The panel lines and hatches are very nicely done (engraved).
The packaging of these models is very nice, it comes in a rectangular styrofoam pack. The pack in turn, goes inside a full color cardboard sleeve.
The pack measures 10 inches by 9 inches by 2.5 inches.
The Short Stirling was the first four-engined British heavy bomber of the Second World War.
The Stirling was designed by Short Brothers to meet an Air Ministry specification from 1936. When the preferred design from Supermarine had to be abandoned, the Stirling was ordered for the RAF. It entered service in early 1941 but had a relatively brief operational career as a bomber, being relegated to second line duties from late 1943, when other more capable four-engined RAF bombers, specifically the Handley Page Halifax and Avro Lancaster, took over the strategic bombing of Germany.
The Stirling was used for mining German port areas and new built and converted Stirlings fulfilled a major role as a glider tug and supply aircraft during the Allied invasion of Europe in 19441945.
