Cupp, a 12-victory ace of Marine Fighter Squadron 213 (VMF-213), nicknamed the “Hell Hawks.” During July 1943, VMF-213 was stationed on Guadalcanal, a critical Allied stronghold in the Solomon Islands campaign.
